Basic IUD Birth Control Information

IUD, short for intrauterine device, is one of the considered most effective forms of birth control. It is basically a small t-shaped device that is inserted into a woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is made of a flexible plastic material. On its end are two transparent strings that women can use to check its placement.

IUD birth control generally works by either preventing the fertilization of the egg or killing the sperm before it reaches the egg. It is of two types, the one being hormonal and the other being made of copper. Though both are of the same purpose, they differ on how they fulfil that purpose. The hormonal IUD releases hormones and can be effective for up to five years while the copper-made has a 10 year effective period at the least.

Compared to other birth control methods such as pills, intrauterine device is considered better. Mainly it is because of its benefits. For one, it is for long term. It can provide protection from pregnancy from five to 12 years. And unlike the taking of the pill, it only needs a few minutes to work. The doctor only has to get it inserted.

Apart from those, it also decreases the risk of ectopic pregnancy, reduces heavy menstrual flow and helps prevent endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer. One more thing is that does not cause weight gain.

Nevertheless, it has some side effects and disadvantages too. Similar to the oral birth control method, it can also cause headaches, mood swings, breast tenderness and even acne. The cost of its insertion is high the reason why its price is considered as its major disadvantage. Besides that, a doctor is needed to have it inserted and removed.

Generally, IUD birth control is an effective method. However, read reviews and gather as much information as you can to clearly understand its positive side as well as the negative part. Better yet, ask your doctor for a more accurate knowledge and better judgment.
